HAIR TYPE AND HOW IT AFFECTS DANDRUFF
All hair has the same basic structure, but the way hair grows is different depending on ethnicity:
- Afro-textured hair – each hair strand tends to grow closer to the scalp in a curled, helix shape. This gives the impression that the hair is denser
- Asian hair – the hair tends to grow faster than other ethnicities and also grows perpendicular to the scalp, giving the hair a thinner appearance
- Caucasian hair – grows at an angle from the scalp and is slightly curved
These differences don’t affect how susceptible you are to dandruff – after all, the dandruff-causing microbe Malassezia Globosa is present on everybody’s scalp – but they do affect the types of products you use.
For example, the curlier your hair is, the harder it is for natural oils on the scalp find it harder to run down to the end of each strand.
So when it comes to treating dandruff you need to think about not only the best shampoo for getting rid of dandruff, but also making sure the variant is right for your hair type.
CHOOSE A DANDRUFF SHAMPOO THAT WORKS
Whatever your hair type, you need a shampoo that contains an active ingredient that’s proven to work.
We use zinc pyrithione in all our anti-dandruff shampoos– it’s been tried and tested by regulatory bodies around the world and has been proven to get rid of flakes and keep your hair and scalp protected.
It works by going to the root of the problem and inhibiting the growth of the dandruff-causing microbe, Malassezia Globosa.
MATCH YOUR DANDRUFF SHAMPOO TO YOUR HAIR TYPE
Choosing your shampoo is more than just picking the active ingredient (though it’s a very important place to start!). Next, think about your hair type and choose a variant that’s designed for it.
For African American hair, use a shampoo with extra moisturisers as your hair is likely to be drier. A nourishing anti-dandruff shampoo will help not only get rid of flakes but also provide extra nourishment for dry, textured hair.
